Typical Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival
Our driver will be at your nominated collection point at the agreed time to collect you, your team and all your kit. We greet you at Campbelltown, our home for the night, with a hearty meal cooked on an open fire. We will go over your Caledonia Way adventure and then leave you to sample a wee dram of local produce and rest for your big first day.
Day 2 – Campbeltown to Rockfield
- Approx. 2.5hrs
- 45km/27mi
- 660m
Seal, dolphin and porpoise-spotting is your main job today as you cruise the coastal B842 along the Kintyre Peninsula, the majority of which is a quiet single track with many a passing place, taking you to camp near Rockfield.
Day 3 – Rockfield to Kilmartin
- Approx. 3hrs
- 56km/35mi
- 440m
Leaving the coast on day 3 you are met with fantastic views of West Loch and the hills beyond. After Redhouse you join the slightly busier A83/A816, which takes you past the circa 2000 year old Dunadd Fort and the Temple Wood Stone Rings. We meet you with warm food and comfortable beds at camp, just outside Kilmartin.
Day 4 – Kilmartin to Taynuilt
- Approx. 2.5hrs
- 51km/29mi
- 670m
Soon after leaving Kilmartin you pass the historic Carnasserie Castle before leaving the A roads behind you for another day of glorious, tree lined single track, this time with awesome Loch Awe as your guide! Each treacherous ascent rewards you with a stunning vista on this 15 mile lochside stretch, before turning inland and heading for camp by Taynuilt.
Day 5 – Taynuilt to Duror
- Approx. 3hrs
- 47km/29mi
- 420m
About 12km (7.5mi) outside of Taynuilt you’ll pass over Connel Bridge on The Falls of Lora, a popular spot with experienced kayakers. Beyond the falls you can look forward to the white sandy beaches of Loch Creran and the picturesque villages of Creagan and Portnacroish before coming to rest by Duror, near the banks of Loch Linnhe.
Day 6 – Duror to Lochyside
- Approx. 2.5hrs
- 46km/26mi
- 370m
Day 6 starts out skirting the beautiful Kentallen Bay and follows the banks of Loch Linde all the way to Fort William. Tonight we camp a stone’s throw away from Ben Nevis in Lochyside – part of the outdoor capital of the UK. Let us know if you fancy a break day here to climb Ben Nevis, test yourself on world class mountain bike trails, or fully embrace the foam on a white water rafting trip you won’t forget!
Day 7 – Lochyside to Fort Augustus
- Approx. 2.5hrs
- 48km/30mi
- 460m
Beyond Fort William you follow the A82 along the southern bank of Loch Lochy and the Northern bank of Loch Oich, towards Fort Augustus for the night. The A82 can be pretty busy during peak tourist season so if you’re intending on tackling the Caledonia Way in mid summer we can discuss options to route you on some quieter B roads.
Day 8 – Fort Augustus to Inverness
- Approx. 2.5hrs
- 51km/32mi
- 470m
The home not-so-straight! The final day in the saddle starts out with an epic climb up General Wade’s Military Road, the steepest ascent of the tour which takes you to the peak of the Caledonia Way – Suidhe Viewpoint – with fantastic views of Loch Ness and beyond. The majority of the day will be spent free wheeling towards Inverness but there are still a few climbs to test your legs (this is Scotland after all), before you get to the final camp for a well deserved rest.
Day 9 – Home
Congratulatory breakfasts of Arbroath Smokies, eggs, and fresh bread all round for our Caledonian Challengists this final morning! When you are recuperated we deliver you and your kit home or to your nominated point for the rest of your jubilant recovery.
If you’d like to extend your Caledonia Way adventure there’s a myriad of options for break days, from mountain bike parks, to whitewater rafting to climbing Ben Nevis. This route is road based but there is a gravel option too, following National Cycle Route 78, which is coming soon. Get in touch and we can talk through the options to extend your stay and personalise this basic itinerary.
